Where is pharmacy going?

I am starting this blog to see what pharmacists think of their profession, and what the perceive will be its future, both in the short term and the long term. I feel that the profession has expanded rapidly and a plethora of new graduates are about to come into the field. As a pharmacist for more than 35 years, I have seen a potential for many areas of growth, but in reality very few changes, not withstanding the tremendous growth of technology. I do not see any improvement in the actual quality of work environment for pharmacist in the retail setting, as well as the institutional setting. I have been a Consultant Pharmacist for years, but see that going by the wayside. The schools say that many new opportunities are going to be created due to the aging population, but I am also skeptical of that. I have seen shortages in the field as well as gluts, and I perceive that a major glut is on its way to developing, right under the noses of the Pharmacy schools who have been crying shortage. It should be noted that Pharmacy has always been a small, divided profession, with no umbrella organization fighting for the quality of work environment and wages. The purpose of this blog is to discuss all related issues, and respectfully disagree when appropriate. I would like to hear all opinions and viewpoints. Thanks! Ed
